Virgin Mobile USA recently consolidated their bi-coastal offices and opened new headquarters in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The prepaid wireless carrier, a unit of Sprint Corp., is currently operating from a temporary office at One Kansas City Place, 1200 Main Street, as they continue renovating nearly 11,000 square feet of vacant office space on a separate floor of the same building.
Virgin Mobile’s move comes as part of a relaunch of the brand. CEO Dow Draper said in a previous release that Kansas City “has an emphasis on entrepreneurship and technology, especially in the Downtown and Crossroads areas, which fits exactly with the direction for the new Virgin Mobile.”
They also believe the downtown area is home to a high-end pool of talent. Virgin Mobile began with only 3 employees and now employs 42 full-time people in a variety of marketing, technology, operations, leadership, and customer service roles.
The state of Missouri agreed to grant up to $1.87 million in incentives through its Missouri Works program if the company creates 84 new jobs over the next five years. Virgin said they plan to hire up to 100 new employees in Kansas City to fulfill that goal. Positions are already listed on their website.
Virgin Mobile chose Kansas City-based architecture and design firm GastingerWalker& to bring their uniquely “Virgin” office to life. The office design reflects the creative culture of Virgin Mobile team members and they hope it also appeals to future employees they want to recruit.
