What’s Next for the New KCI Project

In KC News, New Development, Redevelopment by edckcadmin

We are thrilled that Kansas City, Missouri, voters overwhelmingly approved building a new single-terminal KCI, showing their belief in our city’s future as a top-tier market.

A detailed yearly timeline was shared by KC Aviation Department Director Pat Klein and Edgemoor Development Manager Daniel Moylan at the EDC Advocacy Council meeting on November 20. Plans are proposed and subject to change.

2017 Plans

In the remainder of 2017, the memorandum of understanding (MOU) will be reviewed by Edgemoor and City/Aviation to finalize agreed-upon terms. It is scheduled to be introduced for review by city council on November 30 and approval is expected by the end of this year.

In the meantime, the team is soliciting public input on the design concepts for the airport. Six community design workshops are being held in each of Kansas City, Missouri’s city council districts November 29 through December 14.

Kansas residents, who make up a significant percent of KCI travelers, have been invited to a session at KU Edwards Campus. The workshop schedule is listed below. The 90-minute workshops will open with the design team sharing how they came up with the rendering concepts of the terminal and then break out into roundtable discussions.

2018 Plans

In 2018, the Federal Aviation Administration environmental assessment and airspace study will take place with stakeholders, the FAA, air carriers, TSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Program validation meetings will also take place. These meetings are to validate that the requirements for number of passengers and square footages originally projected in 2014 – 2016 are still accurate.

The conditions of the financing agreement are expected to be finalized on September 20, 2018, and the groundbreaking is planned to take place by fall 2018. Construction will then begin and continue through the end of 2021.

2019 -2020 Plans

In 2019, a concessions Request for Proposal will be issued and a provider selected. Currently there are 42 different concessions contracts. Planners will ensure all concessions incorporate the latest trends in the market. Additionally, construction will continue.

2021 Plans

The new single terminal airport is set to open in the fourth quarter of 2021. Planners will ensure that the new airport’s security, convenience and amenities will be modern not just now, but for the next 20 years as well.
